Clomifene Citrate Description
Clomifene Citrate, also known as Clomid, is a medication used to treat infertility in women who do not ovulate. This includes those who have polycystic ovary syndrome. Use results in a greater chance of twins. It is taken by mouth once a day.
Clomifene Citrate is a non-steroidal fertility medicine. It causes the pituitary gland to release hormones needed to stimulate ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). Clomifene Citrate is used to cause ovulation in women with certain medical conditions (such as polycystic ovary syndrome) that prevent naturally occurring ovulation.
Clomifene Citrate Application
Clomifene Citrate is used to treat infertility in women. It works by stimulating an increase in the amount of hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg (ovulation). This medication is not recommended for women whose ovaries no longer make eggs properly (primary pituitary or ovarian failure).
Used in women who are anovulatory (unable to produce an egg each month), approximately 70% will ovulate when treated with clomiphene; and conception rates consistent with a patient’s age should be achieved. Women less than 35 can achieve pregnancy rates of 20-25% per month as long as there are no other significant factors present. Older patients may not achieve these rates as their declining egg quality will become a factor. We stress that success rates are highly individual and depend on a number of factors. The best thing to do is have a thorough discussion with one’s RE physician to gain a better understanding of the likelihood of success with this or any treatment plan.
Clomifene Citrate must be taken by mouth exactly as directed by your doctor in order to be most effective. It is important to follow your dosing schedule carefully. Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not take it more often or for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor. Long-term treatment with this medication is not recommended and should not be more than 6 cycles.
You may be directed to record your body temperature, perform ovulation tests, and properly time sexual intercourse for best results.

Clomifene Citrate Effects:
Side effects: include flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling); breast pain or tenderness; headache; or
breakthrough bleeding or spotting, pelvic pain and hot flushes. Other side effects can include changes in vision, vomiting, trouble sleeping, ovarian cancer, and seizures. It is not recommended in people with liver disease or who are pregnant. Clomifene is in the selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) family of medication. It works by causing the release of gonadotrophin by the hypothalamus.
There was a theory that clomifene citrate’s anti-oestrogen effect could increase the risk of miscarriage. However, studies have found there is a similar rate of miscarriage to that found in couples who haven’t had any fertility treatment. There’s been some ongoing concern that using clomifene citrate may be linked with ovarian cancer. However, reviews of the evidence haven’t supported this. Findings suggest that it’s the fertility problem itself that may increase the risk, rather than the drugs used to treat it. Drugs that stimulate ovulation can result in more than one egg being released. This increases your chance of multiple pregnancy, which is why ultrasound monitoring is recommended to check how strongly your ovaries respond to the drug. Clomifene citrate can increase your risk of multiple pregnancy, which means you have around a one in 10 chance of conceiving twins.
